You’re looking into Adobe Lightroom presets (desktop or mobile)! That is very exciting! You’re ready to up your photography game and using presets (aka “photo filters”) is one of the easiest ways to do so – it’s even one of the best ways to learn Adobe Lightroom! Our presets are made for the free Lightroom Mobile app, Lightroom via a Creative Cloud-subscription, and you can use them in Adobe Photoshop too. You probably have some questions first, so let us answer them in these Lightroom Presets FAQ!
What are presets?
Presets are basically settings you can apply to a photo that will change the looks of the photo. Basically, these are photo filters.
The big difference is that these presets are made specifically for the editing software Adobe Lightroom and you can tweak all the settings after you’ve applied the presets. So if you don’t like the highlights or some colors, you can change these.
Our presets are what make our photos have that specific look, and now you can get the same look!
Who are these presets for?
Anyone who wants to give their photos a new look! You do not have to have an extensive knowledge of Adobe Lightroom to use these presets. And even if you are a Lightroom-pro, these presets are great to get that specific look as a base, and make it your own!
Can I see how the presets look on my photos before I buy?
Absolutely! Send us 1-5 of your best photos (the presets work best with pictures you’re already happy with, but miss that ‘wow’ effect that a preset can add), email them to [email protected] and we will edit them for you.
By sending in your photos, you agree that the image (before/after) may be used on our channels for promotion!
Will my photos be pretty in just one click?
In theory, this is possible, if the photo is well exposed and the white balance is perfect. In reality, a preset is usually used as a base. Every photo has different lighting and colors. So the presets will have a different effect on each photo.
None of the presets include white balance, and photos shot during sunset or sunrise, or in shadows, are often ‘bluer’/cooler than what we like, so we adjust the white balance.
Some photos are heavy on the highlights and shadows or whites and blacks, so often you need to work on ‘lighting’ to expose your photo properly.
We have a Lightroom tutorial blog post in which we explain how to work with presets and how to edit!
Will the presets work on every photo?
In short: no. That said, the presets are very versatile and are tested on many photos. The ‘portraits pack’ can also be used for landscape photography or wildlife photography (also portraits in a way) for example.
Every photo is different, every time of day the lighting is different, the sky looks different in Europe or Asia or in the Americas. So the colors of a preset will look very different on different photos.
Some presets are made for sunset-scenarios and may look horrible on a bright daylight photo. We have tried to make each pack as versatile as possible, so there’s usually a preset that works with your photo. Of course, we can’t guarantee this, as presets are a creative process and what looks great in my opinion, might not look nice in your opinion.
What do I need to use the presets?
For the mobile presets, you need a mobile phone and the Lightroom app (you can use the app for FREE).
For the desktop presets, you need a computer and an Adobe Lightroom app (nowadays, you need a Creative Cloud subscription). Adobe Lightroom (previously Lightroom CC) connects easily with your mobile app via Creative Cloud.
I personally use Adobe Lightroom Classic more, as it is a little more detailed and with a few more options.
What is the difference between mobile presets and desktop presets?
The mobile presets can be used on your mobile phone in the FREE Lightroom app (without an Adobe Lightroom subscription). Therefore, the files are different and are specifically made for Android and iPhone photos, and other JPEG photos.
The desktop presets are .xmp or .lrtemplate files for the desktop apps Lightroom and Lightroom Classic (on both Windows and Mac, with subscription). These presets are optimized for RAW photo files, but will also work with JPEG photos.
What is the difference between RAW and JPG/JPEG?
This is the file sort you capture your photos in. This is a setting you select in your camera. The standard file extension is a JPG/JPEG, so if you don’t know what you shoot, it’s probably JPG/JPEG.
A RAW-file has a lot more information in the file, therefore the files are a bigger size. Some examples of filename extensions for RAW-files from famous brands are:
.ARW (Sony)
.DNG (DJI and Adobe, if you shoot with the camera in the Lightroom app)
.GPR (GoPro)
.CR2/.CR3 (Canon)
. NEF (Nikon)
These RAW files need to be processed (in for example Lightroom) before you can print/send them or upload them to social media for example.
Because the RAW files are so rich in information, it’s easier to edit these photos as there are more details in the highlight, shadows, and colors.
How do I know if I need .xmp or .lrtemplate files for desktop presets?
This depends on your version of Lightroom on your desktop.
If your icon looks like the mobile app icon (rounded corners) and has ‘Lr’ – you’re using Lightroom (CC or Cloud) and you can download the new .xmppresets.
You can also use these .xmp presets if you have Lightroom Classic with rounded corners with the letters ‘LrC’.
If you are using Lightroom Classic (square icon with ‘Lr’), you need to check your version. From version 7.3 (2018) you need .xmp presets, older versions use .lrtemplate presets. We have our desktop presets available in both .xmp and .lrtemplate – make sure to choose the right fit!
If you bought the Lightroom standalone app when you could buy it without a subscription (before 2016), you likely need the .lrtemplate presets!
How to check my version of Lightroom (desktop only)?
On Mac:
Open Lightroom and go to: Lightroom… (in top menu) > About Lightroom…
On Windows:
Open Lightroom and go to: Help (in menu) > System Info
